Unsworth Junior Raiders U14’s v Royton Town AFC U14’s

Ciaran ‘the cat’ Sutcliffe in goal

Saif Amjad, Sean Grennan and Kieran Foster playing in a back 3 with Joe Mellor and Jackson Fulton playing at unfamiliar wingbacks.  Harrison Fulton holding the centre of midfield with Bailey Hilton and Ewan McMurdo playing either side of him and Rahman Folami and Tommy Wild partnering up front for the first time this season.

This left Sam Marlor, Jack Gibson, Lewis Baker and Rex Abanum as subs with only Isaac Boamah missing with a knee injury.

An almost excellently observed minutes silence and then game on.  This was end to end stuff with with both teams going for it. A slight shake start for Royton at the back gave Unsworth a few glimpses of goal but some good recovery kept them out.  Ciaran was on form and pulled off a couple of excellent saves but the goals came at the other end first, a well worked attack and Bailey Hilton was in the right place at the right time to knock it home, 1-0 with 20 played.

Again end to end stuff which was really good to watch and it was Royton again getting on the scoresheet just 2 minutes later, the ball came in from the right towards Rahman who watched it as he turned but then up popped Bailey to tap home for his second. 2-0 to Royton.  Some late pressing from Unsworth and they managed to pull one back on 32 mins.

Half time 2-1 to Royton.

The 2nd half got underway and the 12th man for Unsworth really stepped his game up, failing to give anything our way and then punishing us for being fouled. This gave Unsworth the opportunity to grab 2 quick goals on 10 and then 13 minutes so 3-2 to Unsworth.

Again, no free kicks given our way so it had to be done the hard way, Harrison ran onto the end of a crossto smash it home 3-3 with 19 minutes of the 2nd half played.

Chances again were created for both sides but some good goalkeeping kept it level.  One minute indicated by the referee left to play and Royton got caught on the break, a big ball over, brought down by the Unsworth forward, knocked infront of him by a blatant deliberate handball and bang, in the net. The referee gave it a goal 4-3 with no time at all left. Talk about robbery, a horrendous error by the referee, seen by everyone but given to knock Royton out of the cup.

A fantastic performance by the lads and we were only beaten by the 12th man
