Royton Town AFC were made to work hard for their 3-1 victory over a gritty Dukinfield Town FC side at The Oldham Academy North on Saturday.
Straight from the kick off Town played some excellent football & it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 7th minute, following a flowing move the ball arrived at the feet of Luke Heron (who put in an excellent performance) on the left & he unleashed a stunning strike from 30yards out that flew past the keeper into the far top corner to put Royton 1-0 up.The home side continued to knock the ball around & with Wayne Dean pulling all the strings should’ve added to the scoreline but they had to wait until the 43rd minute before increasing the lead after an excellent through ball found Danny Gilmartin bearing down on goal only to be foiled by the keeper fortunately for Town the rebound fell at the feet of Liam Wood who tapped it home to make it 2-0.
After the break Royton sought to add to their tally but the next goal went to the visitors who pulled it back to 2-1in the 56th minute.Town then went all out to seal the game & in the 65th minute Ash Ainsworth who had caused problems for the visitors defence all afternoon fired in a shot from 20 yards that put Town 3-1 in front.Town then had a scare when a clearance from Liam Lovell fell at the feet of a Dukinfield forward but Towns young keeper who’s handling had been exemplary throughout redeemed himself as he pushed the shot onto the post & to safety.
A good performance from Royton against difficult opponents whose own performance belied their lowly league position.
Some excellent performances throughout the team but as someone mentioned on Twitter an absolute masterclass from Wayne Dean
