After a couple of weeks off due to the bad weather and many thought we’d be off again but a Friday night pitch inspection deemed the pitch fit.
A slight change to the formation this week to give us more of an attacking option too. Ciaran still out with his broken arm and no word off Fortune meant we had a squad of 16. The starting line-up was:
Joe in goal, Sean, Harrison, Saif and Matthew across the back, Ben, Luke Ewan and Rahman across the middle with Tommy and Jackson up front.
Beechfield sitting 2nd in the table before kick off with 3 wins from 4 games and Royton with 1 win from 3 games.
The game got underway and Royton were ‘uphill’ for the first half. From the first 10 to 15 minutes this didn’t look like it was going to be a good day – the Beechfield right winger was having a field day and causing us all kinds of problems and the 2 up front for us left us a little short in the middle. A couple of quick fixes, #1. Rahman up front and Tommy in the middle #2. Saif switching to left back and Sean in the centre. Straightaway the game started to balance itself out with Jackson & Rahman doing some great link up play and Saif had their winger matched for pace down the side. Sean as steady as ever was yet again superb playing in his old position. It was still a little frustrating as Royton were 2nd to everything. Royton did create the more clear cut chances and then the midfield started firing with Ben and Tommy making some great runs down the wings and Luke & Ewan were putting some great meaty challenges which got the rest of the lads going. Rahman was playing like he was possessed and barking orders out and it was on 30 minutes when he managed to slip the ball out let to Ben who smacked the ball in. 1-0 to Royton. Rahman almost got one himself when clean through but opted to hit it with his laces and it skewed just wide.
The 2nd half got underway and it was end to end stuff, a really good game to watch. Beechfield came close with a rasping shot which Joe could only watch but it smashed off the far post and bounced back out. Some great defending from H, Saif, Sean and Matthew who were putting their bodies on the line to block shots. Towards the end of the game Royton broke and a through ball was played only for the Beechfields last defender to block it with an outstretched arm. Potentially a straight red but just a freekick awarded. Beechfield back on the attack and Matthew took one for the team by taking out their advancing player – a yellow for Matttew. A frantic last couple of minutes but the lads held on – a superb effort yet again and 3 points to show for it, we rode our luck a bit on this one but it goes to show that if you put the effort in then anything can happen.
Man of the match could again have gone to a number of the lads but it was awarded to Rahman. A nightmare for the Beechfield defenders to deal with.
