A summary of Saturdays game.
With over half the team travelling over to Doncaster for Oldhams FA cup game in the afternoon it meant another early kick off, luckily it was at home.
Kieran Foster failed a late fitness test on an ankle injury and the 8:30am meet was a little too early for Rex but still a good turn out with 4 subs.
Ciaran ‘The Cat’ in goal, Sean, Saif, Lewis and Ewan completing the back 4. Joe, Bailey, Harrison, Tommy and Rahman playing across the middle with Jackson up top.
We’ve only ever beaten Roach once before and that was at the start of this season so it wasn’t going to be an easy game.
We got off to a pretty dominant start and played some good stuff with nice passing and support play and it was Tommy who broke the deadlock with 9 minutes played with a low drilled shot from just out past the corner of the box, off the far post into the corner. A great goal. The lads continued to dominate the next 10 minutes or so until a dodgy bounce hit Saifs arm and the ref gave a free kick about 20 yards out. This lad clipped it over and into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 with 20 on the clock. A little disappointing to concede from that and it was their only real effort on goal. 1-1 it stayed until half time.
The 2nd half got underway and Roach were now starting to create chances but Royton were quick to hit them on the counter. It was too much for Roach and they gave a penalty away. With Ewan off the pitch, Harrison stepped up. 10 minutes gone and another chance to go infront. A great strike from Harrison and an equally great save. The lads is like a telegraph pole, standing 6ft tall, not bad for a 13 year old and he managed to save with his feet.
Both teams continued to create chances and it looked like it was going to be a point each… until Tommy was tripped in the box and another penalty…
Ewan back on the pitch stepped up for this one and smashed it in. 2-1 to Royton. With their tails now up, the lads continued to push and after a scramble the ball fell to Isaac who was a few yards out and he forced it in. 3-1 and 4 minutes to play!
Roach were now throwing everything at us and Royton were just clearing everything but with just a minute to go a cross went right over everyone and landed at their lad who knocked it in. 3-2 and just seconds left.
It was a case of everyone behind the ball and just smack it as far away as possible. Then the whistle blew. 3-2 to Royton and that’s the double over Roach. A fantastic performance and now 10 points clear at the top.
