Royton Town AFC U14’s v Elton & Walshaw Meerkats U14’s

Our first game in a long time…

We were up against Elton this week who so far are the only team to have beaten us this season in the league so it wasn’t going to be easy.

From Friday night the lads available dropped from a potential 17 to just 13 so still a couple of sets of fresh legs when needed.

The game got underway and it was pretty even possession wise with Elton creating the better of the opportunities.  Jackson was being frustrated as a lone striker and the midfield lads were slow to support him.

It was 14 minutes in when Elton broke the deadlock, a decent goal.  A few minutes later and Elton had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled offside.

Then our lads started to play a bit better, Tommy kicked a left footed ball over for Bailey to put away. 1-1 with 25 played.  Royton were now playing some good football but still Elton were a threat.  Half time 1-1.

The 2nd half got underway and still a good even game.  The ball pinged over the top and an easy pick up for their keeper.  There were only two people who knew what happened next but the story goes that their keeper spilled the ball and Jackson was there to smash it in from close range. Everyone else had turned to get ready for a big kick.  2-1 to Royton.  The Elton heads had now dropped and Royton dominated the play from here on.

With 2 subs the midfield were being rotated, both Sam and Joe doing a good job on their danger man.  A last minute tactical switch to finish the game off.  Harrison back on to tighten things up. The ball came through to him and he smashed one forward to Jackson.  Any other day he’d have ran with it but he saw the opportunity and knocked it in from distance.  3-1 to Royton with just a couple of minutes left.

Now at every opportunity Rahman was hitting the corners and holding the ball up well, with seconds remaining Elton won a throw back in their own half, Ewan went to knock it to their lad who had just bent down to pick it up and sustained a nasty gash on his forehead.  The ref then decided to blow up to let the lad receive treatment.

MOM was Jackson, kept a cool head in the first half, and a couple of goals in the 2nd.  A great performance from everyone today and a deserved 3 points.

Last week saw Rahman and Jackson pick up January and February play of the month awards.
