Radcliffe Borough Junior Aces U14’s v Royton Town AFC U14’s

A slip up in the title run in last week at home to Radcliffe and this week we were at theirs.  Two key players missing for this crunch game with the Paul Scholes of the team, Harrison and Ciaran ‘The Cat’ Sutcliffe both on Duke of Edinburghs with school.

Having played as a striker, left and central midfield and left back already this season it was now time to try his hand as the shot stopper for Joe Mellor, which suited him as he was still suffering with a ‘hangover’ from a heavy Friday night.

So Joe in goal, Sean, Saif, Lewis and Fortune making up the back four, Isaac, Ewan, Tommy, Jackson and Jack playing in the middle and Rahman up front.  Sam, Kieran and Bailey all ready to come on when needed.

The game kicked off and again is was a dominant Royton display although a few half chances fell to Radcliffe but Joe was on hand to deal with everything thrown at him – rushing out and diving at the feet of attackers, tipping one over the bar and a few straightforward collections.

It took just 13 minutes for the first goal with a great through ball from Jackson to Rahman to calmly slot home.

Royton continued to press and the game could have been over before half time, Bailey side footing onto the post with an instinctive shot and several other decent chances falling to the Royton lads but the half finished 1-0.

The 2nd half got underway and Radcliffe knew they had to win and they got off to a flyer, 3 minutes in and they scrambled one over the line to make it 1-1.  They continued to press and Royton were on the back foot.  A dubious freekick awarded to Radcliffe at the edge of the box and a deep delivery to the back post was headed back in and Radcliffe got it in. 2-1 to Radcliffe.  Royton now started to play some good football and created more chances.  Jackson broke through and hit a screamer but it hit the post and bounced back out.  Another chance went begging when Tommy dropped a corner right into the middle of the box, all it needed was a touch but Radcliffe managed to clear.

Another attack and scramble, the ball falling to Isaac and he smashed it home from close range. 2-2 with 5 minutes to play.  Radcliffe were rattled and a couple of players were losing their rag.  A freekick awarded to Royton half way up the pitch and a booking for Radcliffe.  Seconds remaining.  Jackson to take… he whips in a ball towards the back post, a scramble and Tommy slides in to make it 3-2 – the lads went mental, fantastic scenes…
That was it, a MOM performance at right back for Fortune, that’s 2 in 3 games for him. 2 assists for Jackson, goals from Rahman, Isaac and Tommy.  Brilliant effort from every single player and a big well done to Dave & Neil.
