A superb away victory in the local derby over a good Heyside FC outfit,a cracking game played in a competitive manner that was a great advert for local amateur football.
The 1st half ended 0-0 as both sides sought a breakthrough in a very even affair & the 2nd half started much the same until just after the hour mark as the home side seemed to be getting on top as a good run down the left ended with a cross that was headed home by Adam Dale to give Heyside the lead,Royton refused to panic & pulled it back to 1-1 in the 65th minute when a superb through ball from Joe Heap found Liam Wood who planted his shot past Lee Mullen to give Royton a deserved equaliser. The game was now end to end as both teams looked to take the lead as chances were created at both ends of the pitch but it was Town who took the lead in the 78th minute from a well struck inswinging corner from Ash Ainsworth which was deflected by a Heyside defender past his own keeper to put Royton 2-1 in front. The home team threw everything at the visitors in search of an equaliser but it was Royton who made sure of the 3 points with a 3rd goal in the 87th minute when Liam Wood hit a defence splitting pass to Joe Jacombes who advanced toward goal & calmly placed the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 3-1 to Royton.
A well earned victory for Town in a game that could have gone either way.
In a good all round team performance the evergreen Wayne Dean with his guile skill & endeavour was outstanding throughout.
